Overview Charlotte North Carolina

Downtown Charlotte - Click to visit our NC photo galleryKing George III came to the British throne in 1760.  Young and popular (until 1776, at least: General George Washington's rifle was made at the Mecklenburg factory near Charlotte, NC), in 1771 he married the even younger Princess Charlotte from the duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in Germany. The colonial inhabitants of  North Carolina decided to name their new county after the new queen's home country - Mecklenburg.

Charlotte is called the Queen City. The crown is its official logo. Statues of the young queen are found uptown and at the airport.

The term "Backcountry" to define the Piedmont land of North Carolina was never a good fit for the Charlotte area.  It is just as well that 400 years of  history is not enough for beautiful Charlotte, North Carolina. From "A City on the Move" in the 1980's, Charlotte became "Boomtown USA"  in the 1990's.  With benefits of natural beauty - both mountains and the ocean, lovely lakes and landscaped parks and business areas - Charlotte's dynamic city planners are still creating history now.  The pleasant, sunny climate is a year round lure for Charlotte's outdoor activities.  Charlotte offers dozens of championship Golf courses, all kinds of water sports at Lake Norman and Lake Wylie, over 14,000 acres of parks, and 19 recreational centers.

As is typical of Charlotte, education is not only the foundation of its future, it is an integral part of its history.  The grounds of Queens College, founded in 1857, are some of the most picturesque in Charlotte and well worth a visit.  The Chamber of Commerce is a marvelous information source about area schools and universities.

If you are a sports enthusiast, check out aan NFL football game (Carolina Panthers), an NBA basketball game (Charlotte Bobcats), a AAA baseball game (The Charlotte Knights), or an ECHL hockey game (The Checkers).  Play the greens at one of Charlotte's championship golf courses, or check out the Carolina classic
